A mother read a letter her 18 year old daughter wrote:
Dear Mum,
I thank you for loving me all these years, for taking care of my daily needs, for bringing me up as a Christian. I really appreciate you for all that you have done.
But Mummy, yesterday I realised that the boyfriend I living with has aids. I am so sorry that I have disappointed you. The doctor said that I cannot live till the end of this month.
P.S. Anyway, mum, what I had said above all is not true, what I wanted to say is that I failed my Mathematics.
There, so lets see what we have learnt from here? The mother upon reading the first few sentences got so freaked out and sad that she is almost near to tears. But upon seeing the last sentence, she got so relieved and did not even bother to reprimand her daughter for failing her mathematics. Why is that so? You see, when we compare in this way, the mother is grateful that her daughter will still be alive well and healthy. Then what is the failing of the Mathematics?
In a way, this apply to our daily life. Sometimes, we complain that the sun is too hot but what it is compared to the people who never see the sun (north pole)? Or you complain that the food your mum cook is always the same, but what about those people in africa who do not even know when is their next meal? Or we curse the alarm clock when it rings, but do you see alarm clocks in hospitals? Or we complain that a 9am to 6pm job used up almost all of our time, then what about those who have to work for 12 hours plus?
In fact, if we can be thankful to what we have, we will be so much happier. Like we can be thankful that the sun make us produce Vitamin D. We can be thankful that we get to satisfy our hunger or even experience hunger. We can be thankful that we are alive to switch off the alarm clock. We can be thankful that we have the time from 6pm to 9am (16 hours)to play, eat, sleep and relax. Now people will say is it not tiring to keep giving thanks? Then I ask you, is it not tiring to complain and complain? Ever felt that even after you repeat you whole complain story to so many people and you still do not feel good?
We control our minds, we can choose to look at the good side, or focus on the dark side. Why give weight to something bad and lighten the good things? The more attention we give to the bad things, the more bad things seem to appear and vice versa. As the saying goes," Stress and complains is like darkness, you can never let it go away until you switch on the light".
