Have you always wanted to join a club but upon hearing that there will be competition at the end of the session and you back off? Well, I don’t know about you, but I do in the past. And this has stopped me in pursing the things I have interest. For example, dance. Dancing is really a cool whole exercise for me. In the past, when I was in the control room doing theatre management, I always opened my eyes where there is a dance performance. I enjoy how the body creates different styles to portray and instill different types of feelings into the audience.
So the first thing I did was to sign up for dance course upon knowing that there won’t know be competition and I can take it free and easy without any pressure. However, I ask myself, if that is the case, what is the motive of joining then if there is no certificate or competition? Yes, to enjoy myself, but would not it better if I can actually enjoy myself and at the same time participate in competitions? At least with competitions, there is a trainer to guide me and tell me where I can improve on.
Okay, then so how can we be not afraid of competition? The answer is to be the best in whatever you are doing. Learn and absorb as much as you can during the session. In fact, competition does not only apply to sports/ dance, it applies in our daily life.
Let’s say guys have a fancy for a girl, but upon knowing that she has many suitors, immediately the average guy will back off. Why is that so? The reason is that he does not have the confidence that he will win the girl, just like I do not have the confidence to win the dance competition. And why is that he does not have the confidence? It might be because he felt that he do not look that good, or he is not that rich, and most importantly felt that he is not able to treat her well enough. And the only why he felt that he cannot reason her well enough will be he does not like her much enough.
In our workplace, we also face competition, what we call “promotion”. Those who felt that they do not create much value to the company will automatically worry about losing the promotion chance. Yet they will carry this little bit of hope that they may somehow get promoted. Whereas those who create tremendous value will know for sure that they are going get a promotion and won’t even bother about the announcement of the promotion. They know if they do not get the recognition they want, they will go to other companies who value their contributions.
Therefore, competition is something, which will spur people to strive for what they want to achieve. One will no longer be afraid of it once they know where they stand and is well prepared. In the process, they enjoy it.
