「 Greatly Blessed, Highly Favoured, Deeply Loved 6:31 AM 」
In the past, I thought that history of art will put me to sleep. The curators all have deep passion for arts with minimum Bachelor in Art History qualification unlike me. Its only when I got lots of exposure to many types of arts then I found it is interesting in its own ways. Its actually a depictation of the lifestyle from The Bronze Age, Early Christian, Medievial World all the way to the Modern World. The artist's feelings and thoughts are all being displayed in his works. When Sze Wee wants me to scan a thick, thick book of some images, I was l stunned thinking how boring it is going to be. But the moment I opened the book, I got hook onto the amazing images of ancient times to modern times. Depictations of angels and women made me felt at peace. The upper body of women are usually exposed. Some art works just look so serene and quiet. Prior to that, some works make you ponder and observe them. I found several ones which caught my interest.
Edward Hopper. New York Movie. 1939. Oil on canvas. Hopper's objective, apparently impersonal manner, and his snapshot view of his subjecs, cannot disguise a very personal note of melancholy and loneliness. We look at his paintings, uncertain whether he is praising or criticising what he shows us.
Jan Steen . The World Upside Down. 1663. Oil on canvas. The canvas is inscribed in Weelde Siet Toe (When you lead the sweet life, be prudent). This is a tag or proverb typical of Steen. He intended a warning, there is no doubt that he enoyed depicting scenes of which he obstensibly disapproved.
Roger van der Weyden. The Descent from the Cross. c1435. Painting on Panel. Facial expression is important and gestures and actions are more dramatic.
Roger van der Weyden. The Entombment. c 1450. Painting on panel. The more extrovert aspects of grief have been quietly laid on one side. Only the symbolism of grief is retained in the attitude of the kneeling Magdalen.
